The purpose of this book is to provide information about artificial riding surfaces. Although 'all-weather' has become the accepted term used to describe artificial surfaces, few are genuinely useable in all weathers. In some cases this is because they are basically unsuitable but, in other, availability could be improved by appropriate maintenance procedures. Our experience of dealing with trade enquiries indicates that many people do not have enough information regarding types of surfaces available, their properties and maintenance requirements. In many situations, provision of all-weather surfacing is essential in order to derive maximum pleasure from the horse, while ensuring the horse's well-being.
